As earthly and spiritual beings, we are multifaceted. We are of both the body and the soul. We connect with the mind, intuition, the higher self, and the ego. In our pursuit of happiness, we look to understand the many variables that make us who we are.

We focus so much on inner work that we forget to develop our ‘outer selves.’ The ego, or lack of it, can be the difference between success and misfortune, enlightenment and overly materialistic values. It holds so much importance but tends to be entirely left out of the equation.

Understanding The Ego

What Is the Ego?

In school, we were taught that the definition of ego is a person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance. In a psychoanalytical sense, the ego is responsible for our identity. Everything that you think and feel about yourself stems from the ego. Every judgment you hold and the comparisons you draw between yourself and others are of the ego. It is a result of your conscious way of thinking.

And the spiritual definition? It moves beyond the physical aspects of this world and attaches itself to how we view ourselves as a whole. Through the eye of our ego, we see ourselves as separate from the non-physical world. If we are of the ego, we identify solely with the body and see the world around us, the universe, and everything on the spiritual plane as being outside of us.

The limited view of life that society has placed on us has concealed the truth. We are energy, we are Spirit, and we are one with all around us. There is no us and them, no you vs. the world, and no difference between yourself and the universe. We are all bound by the same material; the energetic flow of life moves throughout all that exists and has ever been.

How Does It Affect Us?

The false perception that the ego gives us creates internal blockages and a sense of helplessness. We end up feeling as though life is happening to us when we are the creators of our existence. Why suffer and believe that your hardships are just a part of life when you can tap into unlimited power?

Shedding the shackles of our ego can create a sense of freedom and unity with the universe and everything around us. By strengthening the bond between yourself and Spirit, you will understand the true nature of your being. Rid yourself of greed, thoughts of lack, and negativity. Remove the layers of who you are and reveal your omnipotent being.

Imagine a life without sadness, disappointment, and frustration. This is the reality that we are meant to live. Abundance and joy are our birthrights, and our only limitations exist solely in our minds. Letting go of the ego simply expands our awareness. Once you stop being deceived by the ego, life will never be the same again.

All the negative beliefs and ideas we have formed in our minds will cease to exist. It is said that the ego is the root cause of suffering, so if we can deconstruct it, we can build a better tomorrow. You are meant to be happy, and you were born to be prosperous, and you were created to be a creator. Whatever goals or dreams you have for your life can easily be yours – if you let go.

Learning How to Let Go

The dissolution of the egocentric mind is the death of the life you once knew, ending the cycle of doubt and uncertainty. Once you let go, you simultaneously take control of your life. So what steps do you need to take to let go of your ego?

To release, you need to connect.

If your ego is centered around the idea that you are separate from the universe, then to release it, you need to get in touch with your higher power. The universe lives and breathes inside of you, look within, and you will change your view of the world around you.

We’ve compiled several methods that will help you to let go of the ego and realize your true potential:

Meditation

To meditate is to reflect and quiet the mind to ascend to a heightened level of spiritual awareness. When we meditate, we leave the ego behind and reconcile with our spiritual identity. The deep trance that mindfulness can bring will connect your conscious mind with the universal powers.

Meditation allows you to detox from the self-inflicted obstacles and complications the ego throws up. Following a careful program of guided meditations, you can let go of your ego and discover new realms of spiritual enlightenment.

Question Everything

Are you suffering, or are you aware of suffering? By asking yourself questions such as these, you can explore and challenge the depth of your ego. Pain that we encounter in life is through our perception of our experiences.

Take a step back whenever you feel like you are being pulled into the negative discourse of worldly matters. By challenging yourself, you open your mind up to an alternative reality. You are no longer blinded by the smoke and mirrors the ego conveys in this state.

Instead, you become aware of your assumptions and beliefs that manifest the very suffering that you are questioning.

Surrender to the Reality of Your Reality

When we look at our circumstances and feel resentful or fearful, we lean heavily on our ego. By having faith in your power and your connection to Source Energy, you will no longer feel trapped in your negative perception of your reality. Life is simply a projection of your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs.

With a simple shift of your focus and intentions, you will draw away from the ideology that you are a small part of this world. You can change the way that you see your reality and the experiences that you have in this life. Find your inner peace and recognize your true, authentic self.
